In the MAIS and ETIA programme all obligatory courses are taught exclusively in English. Some optional courses are offered in German and French. Most of the courses in the Diploma Programme are in English, but there are also a few obligatory courses in German and French.

In general, Political Science or International Relations studies are not sufficient for bypassing the first MAIS year and entering the second MAIS year directly. What is necessary is a programme of postgraduate university study totalling at least 60 ECTS points, covering the basics of political science and international relations, international and European law, international economics and history. These fields of study are all included in the first MAIS year. Those who have studied Political Science or International Relations have to make sure that they have covered the remaining fields of study in some way (e.g. by taking additional, extracurricular classes in international and European law, economics and history).

Yes, if you don’t have the proof of English language ready by the application deadline, you can send or hand it in later, but by the end of March at the latest. But please make sure you mention this delay in your application.

You do not have to provide proof of English language (i.e. TOEFL, CPE or IELTS) if English is your mother tongue, or if you studied in an English-speaking country for more than 3 years, or if your major at university was English language or English translation studies.

Yes, you can hand it in by the end of July at the latest. When applying online you should note the time you expect to receive your diploma in the appropriate box. In case there is an unforeseen delay in obtaining the diploma, even though you have finished your studies, you should inform us about this immediately it and we can grant you an extension.

There is only an entrance exam for the Diploma Programme. MAIS and ETIA students are selected on the basis of their application documents.

Official documents (e.g. proof of university degree, transcript of grades) which are not in English, German or French have to be sent together with a certified translation.

Only applicants for the Diploma Programme and the MAIS who correctly completed the scholarship application form [pdf] can be considered for a scholarship or tuition waiver. The scholarship application form has to be sent to the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna until by March 15 at the latest either by email ( Ingrid.eidler@da-vienna.ac.at) or by regular mail. Scholarship and tuition waivers are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

Applicants for ETIA may apply for the scholarship of the Austrian newspaper “Die Presse”  ( http://www.da-vienna.ac.at/programmes/etia_programme).

The amount granted in scholarships and tuition waivers varies, but most are in the region of 50% of the tuition fee. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis.

The Diplomatic Academy of Vienna offers, in cooperation with the Wüstenrot savings bank, student loans to a maximum sum of € 10,000. The interest rate is 6% (maximum, variable). The loan is paid out in two instalments (e.g. € 4,000 and € 6,000) and is envisaged to fund either the one-year Diploma Programme or the second year of the MAIS programme. Whether a student is granted a loan is decided by a committee. Repayment of the loan starts after 18 months. There are no exceptions to this regulation. The maximum repayment period is five years, with a monthly rate of € 210 (60 monthly repayments). Students can of course repay the loan earlier without any extra cost.
